          Helen Coates


          Based in Manchester, Helen joined DWF in 2002. Helen specialises in litigation, dealing with a broad spectrum of Commercial Insurance related matters, particularly those involving high value/complex disputes.




          Helen regularly advises major insurer clients in relation to commercial insurance claims and/or disputes, particularly those of a high value/complex nature including in respect of policy coverage, property damage, business interruption and liability claims arising from various causes including for example substantial fires, floods and other adverse occurrences.

          She also regularly advises in relation to product liability claims and is often instructed by insurer clients to provide policy coverage advice in relation to such claims.

          In addition, Helen has extensive experience acting in relation to multi-party litigated disputes and matters involving international aspects such as issues of jurisdiction and/or applicable law.

          Helen has particular expertise in defending claims against insurers and assisting insurers in resolving and handling a broad range of insurance related complaints including those which are submitted by consumers and small businesses to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). Helen leads a team of solicitors specialising in this area.

          • Laserpoint Ltd v. Prime Minister of Malta & Others [2016] EWHC 1820 (QB)
          • Acted for the successful appellant in an appeal against the enforcement in England of a multi million pound judgment of the Civil Court in Malta against the appellant.  There had been a delay of nearly 26 years before judgment was issued which in all the circumstances was a breach of Article 34 of Regulation (EC) 44/2001 (Brussels 1).
