        Douglas Howie

Douglas is a Partner in the Corporate and Banking team. For over 25 years he has specialised in advising on transactions in the insurance market, including some of the largest.

Douglas' expertise includes mergers and acquisitions, commercial alliances, insurance business transfer schemes, corporate re-organisations and insolvencies and related regulatory issues. He also regularly drafts bespoke insurance policies for insurers or insureds.

Douglas is highly regarded for his client focused approach and availability. He is well known for providing practical advice and for my responsiveness to client needs.

He has extensive transactional and regulatory experience, much of it acting for insurers, insurance intermediaries and buyers of insurance. He has also acted for buyers of bespoke insurance products and led a team that won the Legal Business Insurance Team of the Year Award.

He has been involved in many outsourcing arrangements and assisted in various start-ups and authorisations. He regularly advises on regulatory matters, particularly in the insurance sphere. He has a strong track record of persuading regulators to modify their position to a client's benefit.

Most of his work is for businesses active in the London insurance market (or those which buy commercial insurance in the London insurance market). That market is international so many clients are either based, or owned by people, outside the UK so he has extensive dealings with non-UK clients, particularly people in South-East Asia (Singapore and Hong Kong), Europe (Germany, Switzerland and France), USA and Australia. In addition to his UK-based international experience he has practiced as a solicitor in Hong Kong for two years.

Outside of work Douglas sings in choir that comprises four married couples, giving a number of concerts for charity each year.

He enjoys distance running, and can still complete half marathons in about two hours. He is part of a team that organizes a 10km race each year in the community where his running group is based.

Douglas plays golf regularly and enjoys hill walking, a high point being reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2011.
